The Road to Serfdom

1 · A free people
Millions of individuals, each pursuing their own ends — a riot of different goals, coordinated by no one in particular.
2 · The single plan
To plan the whole economy, one collective goal must replace the many. Individual ends get bent toward the center.
3 · We can't agree
No majority agrees on the one plan in detail. The planners stall — and a cry rises for a strong leader who can "get things done."
4 · The strong man
Power concentrates around the plan. Dissent is no longer mere disagreement but an obstacle — to be removed.
5 · Your dial
Coordination and freedom trade off. Move the dial and watch the cost. How far would you go?
